Clinical placement

HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing students are required to undertake 400 hours of unpaid Clinical Placements which may be located anywhere in Australia.

Bachelor of Nursing students are required to undertake 800 hours of unpaid Clinical Placements which may be located anywhere in Australia.

Clinical Placement Handbook

You must read the handbook prior to and during each clinical placement so you can understand your obligations and responsibilities.

Fitness for Practice Form

Bachelor of Nursing students are required to complete and sign the Fitness for Practice form prior to clinical placement. If you are unsure about the requirements outlined in this form you should seek advice from your Clinical Placement Coordinator.

InPlace is your system for managing nursing clinical placements (work-integrated learning). InPlace is a central hub for all information relating to placement including your placement allocation, required documentation and industry information. The system provides instant access to your allocated placement information anywhere, anytime on any device.

Vaccination requirements

Up-to-date immunisations are a requirement for all nursing students attending clinical placements, including annual flu vaccinations, in line with state and national health department directives.

Check your state for specific vaccination requirements, including COVID-19 vaccinations.

Information for aged-care and disability workers - this requirement will also apply to nursing students completing a clinical placement in an aged-care setting.

Labs and uniform

All nursing students have access to Clinical Simulation Labs where experienced educators will teach required skills and assist in linking theory to practice. 

All lab sessions are compulsory. Correct uniform is required to be worn when attending these lab sessions.

Uniform Requirements
  • University provided polo shirt only. No long sleeves or visible tops under the polo.
  • Cardigans/jumpers may not be worn whilst on duty.
  • Navy blue/black tailored trousers or skirts - excludes jeans, tracksuit pants, hipsters or cargo pants.
  • Enclosed navy blue or black non-slip shoes as per WHS requirements - no canvas, joggers or slip-on shoes.
Hair
  • Must be kept neat, clean and tidy at all times.
  • Long hair must be tied back or fastened in such a manner so as not to hang below the collar.
  • Hair ties, bands, combs and other hair fasteners are to be at a minimal and of a neutral colour or navy.
  • Facial hair - clean-shaven or neatly trimmed beard.
  • Approved headwear must be clean, neat and tidy.
Fingernails
  • Must be kept neat, clean and well-manicured.
  • No acrylic nails or varnish.
  • Fingernails should not be visible over the top of the end of the finger when the hands are held with the palms up.
Jewellery
  • One plain wedding band, one set of sleepers, studs, or small earrings that sit on the lobe of the ear and do not pose a danger to the patient, resident or student are the only items of jewellery to be worn during placement.
  • Facial or other visible body piercing is not acceptable. If visible, or the stud is non-removable, it must be covered by skin coloured tape.

HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing subject enrolment

The enrolment process for the HLT54121 - Diploma of Nursing course is manual and actioned by Torrens University on behalf of students. To be eligible for manual enrolment, continuing students must provide their written consent.

How does it work?
  • To be enrolled in your next subjects, you are required to respond to the re-enrolment survey*. The survey link is sent 4 weeks prior to the start of the trimester, to both your student and personal emails. Please also check your spam folder.
  • Once enrolled, you will receive a confirmation of enrolment including your timetable. This will only be sent to your student email.
  • You will also receive your invoice via your student email within 24 hours of being enrolled.

In the meantime, you can view your timetable on your Student Portal according to your progression and start organising yourself for the upcoming trimester.
