New Restrictions in Melbourne from Sunday 2 August and Regional Victoria from Wednesday 5 August

The Victorian Government has announced Stage 4 restrictions to apply in Metropolitan Melbourne from 6pm Sunday 2nd August and Stage 3 restrictions for Regional Victoria (including the Mitchell Shire) from 11.59pm Wednesday 5th August.

In compliance with these restrictions, both Flinders Street and Fitzroy campuses are now closed until further notice.

Compulsory Face Masks in Melbourne from Wednesday 22 July 2020

As of 11.59pm, Wed 22 July Department of Health & Human Services, Victoria states, if you live within metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire, you must wear a face covering whenever you leave your home, unless an exception applies.

Fines of $200 may be issued for failing to comply. A face covering needs to cover both your nose and mouth. It could be a face mask or shield. See FAQs here.

Key questions

Do I need to wear a face covering at my place of work or at my desk or elsewhere even if I am 1.5 metres away from others?

Yes, if you live in metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire you must wear a face covering when you leave your home for one of the four reasons, which includes working, unless an exception applies. If you work in an enclosed office on your own, you don’t have to wear a mask while at your desk. If someone enters your space where you are working or studying, and when you leave it, you need to wear a mask

As an employer, do I need to require my staff to wear face coverings?

Yes, you are required to ensure your employees wear face coverings if they are working, unless an exception applies.

Will face coverings be mandatory for teaching staff?

It is not compulsory for teachers and educators to wear face coverings while teaching as face coverings can interfere with their ability to clearly communicate with students. Teachers, educators can choose to wear face coverings if they wish when teaching.

Teachers and educators must wear face coverings in other areas of the facility when not teaching.

Can I make my own face mask?
Yes, you can make your own mask, there are instructions on how to make your own mask.
Do students need to wear a face covering?

Students in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire will need to wear face coverings from 11:59pm on Wednesday 22 July.
