Scam emails may:

1. Request sensitive information like passwords, account numbers, or personal details.
2. Contain urgent or unexpected requests for money transfers, gift cards, or financial transactions.
3. Include suspicious attachments or links that seem unusual or out of context.
4. Ask you to contact the person or perform certain actions on an urgent basis.

To protect yourself from potential harm, please follow these security best practices:

• Verify the sender: Double-check the sender's email address for accuracy. Be cautious if it looks slightly different from what you usually expect.
• Think before you click: Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unfamiliar or suspicious emails. When in doubt, verify with the sender through other means.
• Guard sensitive information: Don't share confidential information via email unless it's through secure, authorised channels.

• Report suspicious emails: If you receive an email that seems dubious, report it immediately to Student Support.

International student scams

Studying in Australia can be exciting and offer new experiences. Unfortunately, sometimes students are targeted by scammers.

Study Melbourne has a great guide to what to look out for and how to protect yourself against student scams.

Some examples of scams targeting international students are:

• Chinese authority scams
• Ransom and fraud
• Visa and immigration status
• Course fee/tuition payments
• Social media or online forums
• Rental conditions
