Your student Office 365 account

Student Email (Office 365) - LOG IN HERE

You will automatically be allocated a student Microsoft Office 365 account and Outlook email address.

All communication from campus and academic staff will be sent to your student email account. You must activate your account and check your email regularly or you will miss out on important information about your course. Information about activating your student email account will be sent to your personal email address. Please contact Student Services if you have not received this.

Your Office 365 account will give you access to the Office 365 apps online, Outlook (email and calendar), OneDrive (cloud storage), and the ability to download the desktop software for free. Using Office 365, you will be able to email, instant message, video conference, share and edit documents online and much more. Most importantly, Office 365 will enhance the way in which you are able to communicate and collaborate while you study.

Activating your account

Login information will be sent to your personal email address. Please contact Student Services if you have not received your new email information.

  1. Go to https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com
  2. User ID is your student email address as provided by Student Services
  3. Continue self-service password reset to set your initial password 
  4. Follow the multi-verification process (if prompted).
    Multi-verification is used to help you regain access if you become locked out of your account.
  5. Click on ‘Outlook’ to access your email.

As a security measure, and to keep your account safe, you will also be required to change your password every 90 days.

Email address format

Your new email address will be made of your full name and college or institution, for example:

  • jane.lastname@college.think.edu.au
  • john.lastname@college.torrens.edu.au

Setting up email on a smartphone or mobile device

Device Instructions
Android

Note: Microsoft does not guarantee that you will be able to access your Office 365 email via the default mail client on your Android device. We recommend that you use the official Microsoft Outlook app.

  • Download the Microsoft Outlook app from the Google Play Store.
  • Select Office365 as the account type.
  • Sign in using your student email account.
iPhone or iPad

Note: If you have previously set up your student email on your device, you must remove it before you configure it again.

  • Tap Settings.
  • Tap Mail > Contact > Calendars
  • Tap Add account
  • Tap Exchange
  • Enter your student email address.
  • Enter your student account password.
  • Enter a description for the account e.g. SSNT email
  • If required enter:
    • Domain: ssnt.think.edu.au
    • Server: outlook.office365.com
  • Tap Next.
  • Tap Continue.
  • Enter your student email address in the username field.
  • Tap Next.
  • Select the information you wish to synchronise with your iPhone and tap Save.
Older versions of iPhone

Use the instructions as per iPad set-up above.

Note: Microsoft does not guarantee that you will be able to access your Office 365 email via the default mail client on your Apple device. We recommend that you use the official Microsoft Outlook app.

  • Download the Microsoft Outlook app from the App Store.
  • Select Office365 as the account type.
  • Sign in using your student email address and your student account password.
Windows Phone Note: If you have already set up your student email on your device, you must remove it before you configure it again.
  • Swipe left.
  • Locate and tap Settings.
  • Tap Email+accounts.
  • Tap Add an account.
  • Tap Exchange.
  • Enter your student email address 
  • Enter your student account password.
  • Tap Sign in. It will fail at this point, but a 'Sign in' window will re-appear with an extra field for username.
  • Enter your student account username.
  • Tap Sign in again to do the authentication.
  • Tap Done.

Alternatively, you can configure your Office 365 email as follows:

  • Swipe left.
  • Locate and tap Settings.
  • Tap Email+accounts.
  • Tap Add an account.
  • Tap Advanced Setup which is in the bottom of the list.
  •  Enter your student email address
  •  Enter your student account password.
  •  Tap Next.
  •  Select Exchange ActiveSync.
  •  Enter your student account username
  •  Leave "Domain" blank.
  •  Enter Server name: outlook.office365.com
  •  Change account name to whatever you wish.
  •  Tap Sign in.
Other devices Use the following details in the same format to configure any other mobile device.
  • Username: Your student username.
  • Email address: Your student email address.
  • Password: Your student account password.
  • Server: m.outlook.com .

Forward email from Office 365 to another email account

It's easy to set up forwarding so email sent to your Office 365 account automatically goes to another email account, such as your Gmail account.

Sign in to Office 365 at https://portal.office.com

  • At the top of the page, choose Settings > Mail.
  • Choose Forwarding. If you don't see this option, it's not available for your account.
  • You can forward email to one other account.

There are some things you need to be aware of if you do auto-forward your student emails:

  • You must always use your student email address when contacting the College by email. University staff can only accept and respond to emails sent from official student email addresses, as it's how we can be sure we're communicating with you and that your privacy is maintained.
  • It is also highly recommended that you set your private account to always respond to incoming College mail by using your connected student email address.
  • Forwarding College emails to a non-university email account will be at your own risk. We are not responsible for the handling of email by other email service providers and do not guarantee delivery to forwarding addresses and we do not monitor and/or manage undeliverable messages.
  • We also strongly recommend that you check your student email inbox via Gmail on a regular basis to ensure mail is being received and forwarded and that your storage capacity has not reached its limit.

Password issues

I am logging in for the first time

  • Contact Student Services to check your default password.

I have forgotten my password

Trying to change your password and getting the message "Your password is not correct"?

Please go to the Microsoft password reset page.

You may be prompted to add a secondary email or your mobile number as part of the two-step verification process. Your information will not be used for anything other than verifying your account.

I don't know my username

  • Contact Student Services to request your student email address.

Password recommendations

  • Don’t use a password that is the same or similar to one you use on any other websites
  • Don’t use a single word, for example, password, or a commonly-used phrase like Iloveyou
  • Make passwords hard to guess, even by those who know a lot about you, such as the names and birthdays of your friends and family, your favourite bands, and phrases you like to use.

How to install your free Office software

  1. Login to Office 365 with your student account.
  2. Make sure you are on the Dashboard, which shows the list of online apps (Outlook, Word etc.)
  3. Click on the 'Install Office Apps' link in the top right corner.

Note: If you have a previous version of Office installed, you may need to uninstall this first as at it will be connected to a different Microsoft account.

Office 365 tips - focused inbox


Outlook on the web defaults to show a Focused Inbox which filters emails it thinks are important, as well as an Other tab.

To turn this off:

  1. Select Settings Settings icon > Display settings > Focused Inbox.
  2. Under When email is received, select "Don't sort messages."
  3. Click OK.

 

Key points to remember

It is essential that you check your student email regularly.

Failure to do so will result in you missing important dates, deadlines and information. No waivers or consideration will be given to you if you miss important dates due to not reading your student email.

Install Office on your computer

Here's how to download your free desktop version of Office.

  1. Login to Office 365 with your student account.
  2. Make sure you are on the Dashboard, which shows the list of online apps (Outlook, Word etc.)
  3. Click on the 'Install Office Apps' link in the top right corner.

Note: If you have a previous version of Office installed, you may need to uninstall this first as at it will be connected to a different Microsoft account.
