Torrens University Australia and Think Education Graduation Ceremonies

Your graduation ceremony is the moment to celebrate all your hard work, sacrifices and effort you have gone through to complete your degree.

Torrens University Australia and THINK Education holds four (4) annual Graduation ceremonies in different cities and times of the year so our students have the opportunity to join in the location of their convenience.

Graduation Information

To be eligible to graduate, you will need to have successfully:

  • Completed the total number of subjects (core and electives) required to complete your award.
  • Paid all your fees with the university including Library fees.
  • Provided all documents required for graduation, for example, your verified USI or placement completion documents (IF your award requires these documents).
  • Updated your personal contact information at the Student Portal, such as mailing address, personal e-mail address and mobile phone.

The next step in assessing your eligibility to graduate is academically assessing your work against the course requirements. If this assessment is successful you will proceed to graduation.

The assessment and approval process involves the review by the Examination Committee (VET/Vocational AND Higher Education students) and ratification by the Academic Board (Higher Education students only) prior to the conferral of the award to ensure that the student met all course requirements.

Sydney Graduation Ceremonies 2021

We are thrilled to announce that we will be holding graduation ceremonies in-person in 2021. 

Your graduation day is a special celebration to recognise your achievements alongside your peers and academics, however, as we have become accustomed to in the past year, circumstances may change in line with the latest health advice from State or Federal Governments. We will promptly inform you of any changes that may affect you.

In the meantime, we look forward to welcoming you to your graduation ceremony.

How is my graduation ceremony allocated?

Once your course completion is approved, you will be invited to the graduation ceremony according to your residential address we have on file, more exactly, the state on your mailing address. For instance: If your mailing address state we have in the system is NSW, you will be invited to the Sydney Graduation Ceremony.

When will I receive my academic documents?

Vocational students – Once you have finished your final subjects, our Examination Committee will finalize your results and determine the successful completion of your course. If successful, they will sign off on your completion.

Your documents including Academic Transcript, Transcript of Results and Testamur will be posted to you within 30 days of approval.

Higher Education students – In order to receive your final documents, we need to ensure you have been through all of the appropriate approvals from our Examination Committee and Academic Board. Once these have been approved, your award will need to be conferred.

Due to the uncertainty of the pandemic, the awards of Higher Education students will be conferred at our Academic Board meetings. If you do not wish to wait until the next academic board closer to the graduation ceremony you have been allocated to, you can opt to graduate in Absentia. Your award will be conferred in your absence and it will be posted to you within 30 days of conferral.

Important note: The awards of higher education Sydney graduands will be conferred on 31st of March 2021. The Student Records and Progressions Team will be posting your graduation documentation 30 calendar days from the 1st of April 2021.

Where will my academic documents be posted to?

The Student Records and Progressions Team will be posting your graduation documentation to your residential address registered in the system within 30 days of conferral.

It is very important that you ensure all your details are updated and correct such as:

  • First Name
  • Middle Name
  • Last Name
  • Personal e-mail address
  • Mobile number
  • Postal/Mailing/Residential address

To update any of the contact details above please complete the ‘Change of Details’ form, and email the Student Records and Progressions with the supporting documentation (if required).  

Important note: Attending the ceremony is optional but receiving your academic documents are dependent on your university fees being fully paid. The final day for Sydney graduands to pay outstanding fees and update contact details such as Name, E-mail address, Mobile, Mailing Address was Friday, 12th of March 2021.

If documents are delivered before the ceremony, what do I receive on the graduation day?

On your graduation day, you will receive a ‘Congratulations Graduation’ folder on stage in place of your testamur.

How do I request to attend the 2021 Sydney graduation ceremony?

If are eligible to graduate, you should have received an email from the Student Records & Progressions about you being approved as a graduand and the location of your ceremony. 

Please e-mail that communication to Student Records and Progression before the 12th of March 2021 requesting to change your graduation ceremony location. 

How do I receive the invitation to my graduation ceremony?

Attending the ceremony is optional but receiving your invitation and academic documents are dependent on your university fees being fully paid.

Your official graduation invitation will be sent 4 weeks before graduation day to your personal e-mail address: Monday, 22nd of March 2021. The last day to confirm attendance or RSVP is by Sunday, 18th of April 2021.

How much is the graduation fee?

The graduation fee is $150 per student. This fee includes:

  • your place at the ceremony; 
  • hire of academic regalia; 
  • a trencher/graduation hat for you to keep; 
  • a printed booklet outlining the graduation program;
  • a digital photo of you on this special day taken by a professional photographer.
  • 2 guest tickets included*

*Due to the recent announcement of Covid-19 restrictions being lifted in NSW, we are able to extend the graduation invitation to your friends and family. Registration websites will be updated on the 25th of March 2021 to accommodate a maximum of two guests (children included), however, this may change if ceremonies are reaching capacity due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Are guests allowed at the ceremony?

Yes. Due to the recent announcement of Covid-19 restrictions being lifted in NSW, we are now able to extend the graduation invitation to your friends and family.

You are not able to register a maximum of 2 guest (children included), however, this may change if ceremonies are reaching capacity due to COVID-19 restrictions. 

If you still cannot join the event in person, the complete ceremony will be also live-streamed as well as recorded for your families and friends to watch in real-time or at a later date. The link will be provided closer to the graduation day.

How do I pay my graduation fee?

The official graduation invitation will be sent on the 22nd of March 2021 to your personal email address with a registration link. 

In the registration link, you will be able to pay your graduation fee.

If attending the ceremony is optional, do I still have to pay the graduation fee?

No, the graduation fee is only paid if you confirm your attendance at the face to face ceremony that will be held at the ICC.

If I cannot attend the ceremony, would it be possible to get the graduation hat and the booklet?

The graduation hats are only for graduands confirming attendance on the graduation day. We use a 3rd party provider who supplies these on the day.

Regarding your booklet, a digital version of the program will be made available to all graduates in the weeks following graduation where you will be able to download this. We will let you know how to do this in another communication after the Graduation Ceremony.

Can I leave the venue with my academic regalia to have pictures taken with my family?

If you want to leave the venue, you will need to return your academic regalia first.

I am a higher education graduand but I am not allocated to the Sydney ceremony and I need my academic documents, what should I do?

You had until Friday, 12th of March 2021 to submit your application to graduate in absentia. Please carefully read the information under the 'Graduating in Absentia' tab. If you did not submit your application, you will need to wait until the Brisbane graduation ceremony for your award to be conferred.

Where and When is my graduation ceremony?

You have successfully completed your studies and approved as Graduand, congratulations! You'll be invited to attend the ceremony in your nearest state. For instance: If your mailing address state we have in the system is NSW, you will be invited to the Sydney Graduation Ceremony. Please see the table below for your reference:

We highly recommend you to not do any travel arrangements until you have been approved as a graduand. 

Can I change the location of my graduation ceremony?

Yes, you can change and attend to any location of your preference as long as you have been approved as a Graduand and met all the requirements.

You can request the change of location up to six (6) weeks before the ceremony. Please contact the Student Records to submit this request.

We highly recommend you to not do any travel arrangements until you have been approved as a graduand. 

When do I receive the invitation to my graduation ceremony?

The invitation to your graduation ceremony will be sent to your personal email address registered in the system four (4) weeks before the graduation date. You will also receive an SMS* notification so you are aware of when the invitation was sent.

*Noting: SMS will only be sent to Australian mobile numbers.

My family is abroad and they want to come to my graduation ceremony. Is it possible to get a letter from the university so they can apply for their visa?

No, these letters are not issued by any of our colleges. Please refer to the Home Affairs website for further information. 

Why haven't I been invited to the ceremony?

Please check the personal e-mail address you have registered in the Student Portal, your invitation might have landed in your spam/junk folder.

If you didn't find it in there continue with the following checklist:

  • Check your personal contact information is up-to-date in the Student Portal, such as mailing address, personal e-mail address and mobile phone.
  • Check you completed the total number of subjects (core and electives) required to complete your award.
  • Check you don't have outstanding fees with the university including Library fees.
  • Check you provided all documents required for graduation, for example, your verified USI or placement completion documents (IF your award requires these documents).

If you are unsure about any of the options mentioned above, this might be the reason for you have not received an invitation. Please contact Student Services to request further information. 

How do I reserve my place at the ceremony?

If you have been successfully approved as a Graduand and your contact details are correct in the system, you will receive an email to the personal e-mail address you have registered on your Student Portal.

The link on the e-mail will take you to the registration site of your ceremony. Follow the steps within the email to proceed with the payment of your graduation fee.

Please be aware that you need to register before the deadline otherwise you won’t be allowed to attend the ceremony.

It is vital you verify your contact details, as the main reason students miss the graduation ceremony is due to outdated contact details in the system. Please check the 'Preparing to graduate' section on the right-hand side of this page.

How much is the graduation ceremony fee and what is included in it?

The graduation fee is $150 per student. This fee includes your place at the ceremony; hire of academic regalia; a trencher/graduation hat for you to keep; a program of the day and a digital photo of you on this special day.

How many guests can I invite to the ceremony?

We are hopeful that we will be able to extend a graduation invitation to your friends and family, however, due to the everchanging circumstances and state/territory laws surrounding the current Covid-19 pandemic, we cannot guarantee guests will be permitted to attend.

Guest attendance will be in accordance with state/territory Covid-19 restrictions and venue Covid-19 restrictions.

You will be advised during registration of the possibility of guests attending your graduation ceremony

Where do I collect my tickets?

On the day of the event, you will need to show the confirmation e-mail of your registration and/or QR code sent after you confirmed attendance and paid the graduation fee. 

I'm having trouble making payment of my graduation fee, who should I contact?

Please contact Graduations.

If I do not reply to the graduation invitation, how do I get my academic documents?

Due to the uncertainty of the pandemic, the awards of Higher Education students will be conferred on the Academic Board, not at the graduation ceremony.

If you are a Higher Education student, the Student Records and Progressions Team will be posting your graduation documentation to your mailing address registered in our system 30 calendar days from the following day after the academic board meeting. On your graduation day, you will receive a ‘Congratulations Graduation’ folder on stage in place of your testamur.

If you are a Vocational student who has been approved as Graduand and you have not received your documents yet please contact Student Services.

Please make sure your information is updated in the Student Portal / My Account otherwise we cannot guarantee the delivery of your documents to the correct mailing address (academic documents cannot be sent by e-mail). For more information, please check the 'Results' page

How can I register for my graduation ceremony?

Four (4) weeks before the graduation day you will receive an email to your personal email address you have registered in the Student Portal. This email will have a link to click on it to register your attendance and pay for your graduation fee.

If you no longer have access to your Student Portal, please contact Student Services to update your details. Attach the 'Change of Details' form that can be found here.

How long is the ceremony?

The ceremony is approximately two (2) to two and a half (2.5) hours, however, please take into consideration that we will ask you to arrive earlier so you can get your academic regalia.

What is the schedule for the graduation day?

The exact time schedule of the day will be sent after the RSVP has closed, however, the usual routine of the day is:

Registration: Check-in of graduands. Only graduands are to be present at the registration area.

Guest Registration: If guests are permitted to attend they will also have to register when they arrive. This will be detailed in your ceremony reminder email closer to the graduation date.

Gowning: After you have registered, you will proceed to the academic robing area.

Cloakroom: All graduands are required to leave any belongings in the cloakroom. To prevent accidents while students walk up to the stage, only mobile phones are allowed to be held during the ceremony.

Briefing: After registration has closed, all graduands are required to go to the main room where important information about the ceremony will be provided.

Ceremony: The ceremony will be approximately two (2) hours. As a sign of respect to other graduands, academics, speakers, and sponsors we require all attendees to stay until the end of the ceremony.

Photography: A professional photographer will be available on the day. A digital photo of you on stage is included in your graduation fee. You will be able to purchase further photography packages from them if you wish to. If you want to take pictures outside the venue, you will need to return your academic dress first.

What is the dress code for the ceremony? 

As this is a formal event, we suggest you wear smart casual attire that allows you to be comfortable the whole day with the academic regalia on top.

Please note that the graduation venue has varied surfaces and there are a number of ramps and stairs to negotiate during the ceremony, so please wear appropriate footwear. No thongs allowed.

Can I leave the venue with the academic regalia?

No. If you want to leave the venue please return the academic regalia you have rented for the day.

What is academic/graduation regalia?

The academic regalia is the academic dress you will wear to receive your award on your graduation ceremony. The robe is called gown and the hat is called mortarboard, the hood and stoles are to distinguish your faculty and degree.

Am I able to hire academic/graduation regalia (gowns/robes, hood, stoles, hats, bonnets etc.)?

Hiring academic/graduation regalia will be only available on the graduation ceremony day. This service will be included in your graduation fee. Please return your academic regalia at the end of the ceremony, except your graduation hat, that one is for you to keep. 

Can I purchase the academic/graduation regalia from the University?

At the moment we do not sell any academic regalia garments.  

You can use the academic regalia photos as a reference and look for an academic regalia provider in your prefered browser.

Which colour identifies my faculty?

Torrens University is very proud to have programs in 5 different verticals/faculties Business, Design, Education, Health and Hospitality. The colours that identify each faculty are:

  • Faculty of Business - Gold
  • Faculty of Design - Pink
  • Faculty of Education - Blue
  • Faculty of Health - Purple
  • Faculty of Hospitality - Teal

Can I wear my cultural attire with my academic/graduation regalia? 

Graduates are welcome to wear cultural attire that represents their cultural traditions and beliefs. Make sure you wear the academic regalia as well.

We encourage any Aboriginal or/and Torres Strait Islander graduate to wear the stole we have available with any of these 2 origins.

What is Graduating in Absentia?

Graduating in Absentia means that you are a Higher Education (HE) student and your degree will be conferred at the academic board OR graduation ceremony but you will not be attending in person.

Who can graduate in Absentia?

Only Higher Education (HE) students who have been approved as Graduands.

This option is not available for Vocational (VET) students as their awards do not need to be conferred.

Does Graduating in Absentia speeds up the delivery of my academic documents?

NO. Your degree needs to be conferred at the academic board. The testamur and academic transcripts will be posted to the postal address you have registered in the Student Portal within 30 calendar days after the ceremony. 

If I graduate in absentia, can I attend another Graduation Ceremony?

NO. Students who graduate in absentia will not be invited to attend a future Graduation Ceremony for that same qualification.

NOTE: Excepting 2020 Graduates who their ceremonies were cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

How can I apply to graduate in absentia?

Before applying you need to make sure:

  • You have met all your course requirements.
  • You have successfully completed all your subjects/units
  • You do not have outstanding fees with the university
  • You are an approved graduand

Once you have completed the above requirements please fill your 'Application to Graduate in Absentia form' and send it to Student Records and Progressions before the deadline (check Key Dates section on the right) so your award can be conferred on the next Academic Board.

You will need to send your form before the deadline so your degree can be conferred at the next academic board.

What happens after I send my application to graduate in absentia?

In order to graduate in absentia, for all High Education students, results are reviewed by the Examination Committee and ratified by the Academic Board prior to the conferral of the award to ensure that the student met all course requirements. 

We will be able to send you documents just until you have been approved as Graduand. 

Once you have been approved, your award will be conferred at the next academic board. Your academic documents will be sent within 30 calendar days after the academic board meeting.

In the meantime, please make sure you don't have any outstanding fees with the University and your information is updated in the Student Portal otherwise we cannot guarantee the delivery of your academic documents.

Where will my documents be sent?

Your academic documents will be sent to the Residential Address you have registered at the Student Portal.

Please refer to the Results page for further information.

When do I get to graduate?

Once you have met the course rules, you will be identified as a potential graduand. Your Program Director will review your completed subjects against the course rules and approve accordingly.

All students must go through this process and be signed off by our Examination Committee and if you’re a Higher Education student, also go through the approval of our Academic Board. Student Records and Progressions will notify you via email once these approvals have been granted.

What happened with the graduation ceremonies in 2020?

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and in the interest of student and staff safety all face-to-face Graduations were cancelled. Instead, we held the amazing "Graduation Without Borders". The live-stream was on Friday 6th November 2020. Watch it here.

The Graduation Without Borders event was a graduation ceremony?

No, Graduation Without Borders was a casual and fun event to celebrate 2020 graduates achievements and great efforts. Together, Torrens University Australia and Think Education wanted to celebrate you, with special guests, and a few fun surprises.

Was Graduation Without Borders my official ceremony?

No, you will have the opportunity to attend your official graduation ceremony in 2021 in the location that suits you the most. 

We will communicate further details by e-mail and SMS once previous to each graduation ceremony location. 

Do not forget to keep your contact details up to date in the system.

Can I get my parchment now?

Am I able to receive my graduation documents online or in a digital format?

No. If you need evidence of the completion of your degree, you can request a 'Completion Letter'. More information on the Results page.

When can I receive my certificate/testamur/academic documents?

If you recently finished your course please check the Results page for further details.

Can I apply to graduate in absentia?

Yes, only if you are higher education student and have received a confirmation email informing you that you have been approved as a graduand. In the meantime, your award is conferred, you can request a 'Completion Letter'. Otherwise, you can find more information on the Results page.

Is it compulsory to attend the graduation ceremony?

Please note that attending the ceremony is optional but receiving your invitation and academic documents are dependent on your university fees being fully paid.

We encourage all graduates to attend as it is a day of joy and recognition of your hard work and effort.

Graduation day is a special time to celebrate with all your peers, teachers, friends and family all students' achievements across Torrens University Australia and Think Education.

I am a 2020 graduate, shall I register for my graduation ceremony in 2021?

If you are one of the 2020 graduates whose ceremony was cancelled, you do not need to do it unless you want to change your graduation ceremony location. Please contact the Graduations Team at your earliest convenience.

We will send further information about the 2021 graduation ceremonies by e-mail and SMS. In the meantime, the most important is you keep your contact details up to date in the system.

If you did not find the information you were after in any of the tabs of our graduation page, please do not hesitate to send us an e-mail, however, please be aware of the information below:

  • To update your contact details, please do it through the Student Portal, contact Student Services or Student Records. It is very important you check this as the main reason students miss the graduation ceremony is due to outdated contact details in the system.
  • Please contact Student Records and Progressions if your enquiry is in regards to the following matters:
    • Academic documents. More information can be found on the Results page. 
    • Identification of graduands/eligibility to graduate.
    • No communications received in regards to your Graduand status.

Ceremony dates and times per faculties:

  • Business and Hospitality - 21st of April 2021 at 2:30PM
  • Health and Education - 22nd of April 2021 at 10AM
  • Design - 22nd of April 2021 at 2:30PM

For Higher Education graduands only:

  • Conferral of Awards on 31st of March 2021
  • Delivery of graduation documents only for Sydney graduands from: 1st of April 2021 

Deadlines:

  • CLOSED - 12th of March 2021:
    • Final day to update your contact details
    • Final day to request to graduate in absentia
    • Final day to pay outstanding fees (course/subject fees or library fines)
    • Final day to request changing your graduation ceremony to another location.
  • 22nd of March 2021: Official invitation was sent by e-mail to approved Sydney graduands.
  • 18th of April 2021: Last day to confirm attendance the ceremony by registration link

Student details

Make sure the following information is up to date in your Student Portal:

Full legal name
This is the name that will appear on your testamur and graduation documents.

Email address
Your graduation invitation will be sent here.

Residential address
We'll invite you to the graduation ceremony closest to where you live.

Mobile
We wil be sending SMS notifications regarding the graduation ceremony.

If we need to reissue your official graduation documents because we cannot contact you, you may be charged a re-issue fee.

If you are unable to update your details in the Student Portal, please contact your Student Services team to confirm.
